IOANNIS POLEMIS

Ioannis Polemis (1862-1924) was a Greek poet, playwright, and translator, associated with the “Generation of 1880” alongside Kostis Palamas and Georgios Drosinis. A committed advocate of the Demotic movement, he became known primarily for his lyrical and dramatic poetry, distinguished by its gentle tone and expressive softness. Born in Athens in 1862, he studied law at the University of Athens without completing his degree. In 1880, supported by a scholarship from the Municipality of Athens, he spent two years in Paris attending courses in aesthetics and art history.

From an early age, he contributed poems and prose to literary journals of his time. His first poetry collection, Poems, appeared in 1883, followed by numerous subsequent volumes, among which The Old Violin (1909) achieved notable artistic and publishing success. He also wrote didactic poems for children under the title First Steps, composed the epic-lyric poem Kastellanos, and edited one of the early anthologies of modern Greek poetry, Lyre: Anthology of Modern Greek Poetry (1910). His theatrical production was extensive, including one-act and three-act plays as well as the comedy Woman, and he translated both verse and prose works by ancient Greek and French authors. He

received several distinctions, including the First Prize at the “Philadelphia Competition” (1888) and the “Award for Letters” (1918). Alongside his literary activity, he held administrative posts in the field of education and in 1909 founded the Society of Theatrical Writers. He died in Athens on May 28, 1924, at the age of 62.

Lost years

Ah, if only they could return, if only they could come back—
the years I lived before I fell in love with you.
Years so distant they have become strangers,
the years I lived without you.

A river flowing over pebbles,
watering neither grass nor flower;
the earth drank it into its dark depths
until even its faintest trace was lost forever.

Ah, if only they could return, so that I might live them twice:
to lavish upon you an unending love,
and for you to be my first and my last,
from my birth until my death.

I have given you only half a lifetime.
I wish I had countless lives,
so that I could love you as you deserve.

Ah, if only the years could turn back!
