LEO VI THE WISE
Leo VI the Wise (886–912) was a highly educated and ambitious emperor, although he was strongly influenced by his close advisers, particularly Stylianos Zaoutzes. The greatest challenge of his reign was securing a legitimate heir, as his first three marriages failed to produce a surviving son. When Zoe Karbonopsina gave birth to the future Constantine VII, Leo contracted a fourth marriage, triggering the well-known Tetragamy Controversy and a serious conflict between the imperial government and the Church. The dispute led to the deposition of Patriarch Nicholas Mystikos, who was reinstated shortly before the emperor’s death. Leo was also an energetic legislator, issuing the Procheiron, the Novels (Novellae), and, most importantly, the Basilika, a comprehensive codification of Byzantine law that remained the foundation of the empire’s legal system for centuries. He further enhanced the prestige of the Byzantine Empire through building projects and his extensive literary and theological writings.
