Monument of E. Venizelos/Kassimi Streets

The monument in the park at the intersection of Venizelos and Kasimi Streets, on the boundary between the municipalities of Neapolis-Sykeon and Thessaloniki, features a relief-carved metal figure set against a white background. It depicts a female figure in dynamic motion, proudly raising an olive branch above her head. Her hair is styled in long braids, while her body appears to soar through the air.  In Greek art, the female figure is typically an allegorical representation rather than the depiction of a specific individual. She primarily symbolizes Freedom, progress, or Greece itself as the personification of the nation, embodying ideals of independence, national unity, and the enduring continuity of Hellenism. When portrayed on monuments dedicated to wars or the National Resistance, this figure also represents Victory, Resistance, and Hope, paying tribute to those who fought while emphasizing the enduring struggle for freedom and human dignity. Her dynamic posture conveys triumph over oppression and symbolizes the people’s march toward a free and democratic future. This iconographic tradition was shaped by 19th-century European allegorical art and became firmly established in 20th-century Greek public sculpture as a powerful symbol of collective memory, national pride, and democratic ideals.

Monument of E. Venizelos/Kassimi Streets

The branch held by the female figure resembles either a laurel or an olive branch. The laurel symbolizes victory, glory, and honor, while the olive branch represents peace and reconciliation. The circular white background against which the figure appears to soar symbolizes the sun, the cycle of life, or eternity, whereas the flowing drapery enhances the impression of wind and movement, a characteristic feature of many monumental sculptures of the twentieth century. The allegorical depiction of a female figure holding or raising symbolic objects, such as a flag, has been an established motif in European art since the nineteenth century. This iconographic tradition has frequently been employed to personify abstract ideals—including Liberty, Victory, Peace, and the Nation—and has exerted a lasting influence on the visual language of modern public monuments. The best-known example is Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People (1830), in which Liberty is portrayed as a woman raising the French tricolour and leading the people into revolt. Likewise, Marianne, the national personification of the French Republic, is frequently depicted holding the French flag as a symbol of liberty and democracy. In German art, the allegorical figure of Germania is similarly represented with a flag or an imperial standard, personifying national unity and independence. Comparable symbolic figures also appear in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Greek art, where female allegorical figures personify Greece or Liberty. While they do not invariably carry the Greek flag, they embody the ideals of national independence, freedom, sacrifice, and collective memory, particularly in works commemorating the Greek War of Independence, the Balkan Wars, the Second World War, and the National Resistance.
