ΣΤΕΦΑΝΟΣ ΒΕΛΔΕΜΙΡΗΣ
Ο Στέφανος Βελδεμίρης γεννήθηκε το 1937 στις Συκιές της Θεσσαλονίκης. Δολοφονήθηκε στις 26 Οκτώβρη 1961 και τιμάται ως αγωνιστής που έπεσε παλεύοντας για δημοκρατικές ελευθερίες. Ήταν τρεις μέρες πριν γίνουν οι βουλευτικές εκλογές βίας και νοθείας, όπως έχουν καταγραφεί ιστορικά, στις 29 Οκτωβρίου του 1961. Με σκοπό να βγει αυτοδύναμη η κυβέρνηση της Εθνικής Ριζοσπαστικής Ένωσης (ΕΡΕ) του Καραμανλή, ο ίδιος, σώματα ασφαλείας και ένοπλες δυνάμεις κατηγορήθηκαν ότι έβαλαν σε ενέργεια το σχέδιο «ΠΕΡΙΚΛΗΣ» με αρχηγό τον Γ. Παπαδόπουλο, μετέπειτα δικτάτορα του ελληνικού λαού το 1967. Το σχέδιο συμπεριλάμβανε τρομοκρατία, βία και τους ξυλοδαρμούς πολιτών ώστε να καθοριστεί το εκλογικό αποτέλεσμα. Η Ενιαία Δημοκρατική Αριστερά (ΕΔΑ) συμμετείχε στις εκλογές με την ονομασία ΠΑΜΕ. Ο Στέφανος Βελδεμίρης ήταν στέλεχος της νεολαίας της ΕΔΑ και είχε ενεργό δράση στην πόλη της Θεσσαλονίκης. Μαζί με τον Μόρφη Στεφούδη νοίκιασαν ένα ταξί και από τα πίσω παράθυρα μοίραζαν προκηρύξεις της ΕΔΑ στη δυτική πόλη. Σε μπλόκο της αστυνομίας στους Αμπελόκηπους, ο χωροφύλακας Σπυρίδων Φιλίππου πυροβόλησε και πέτυχε τον Βελδεμίρη, ο οποίος πέθανε την επομένη στο Λαϊκό Νοσοκομείο Θεσσαλονίκης, νυν Ιπποκράτειο, μόλις 24 χρονών. Η δίκη του δολοφόνου χωροφύλακα, Σπυρίδων Φιλίππου, έγινε πέντε μήνες αργότερα στο Κακουργιοδικείο Θεσσαλονίκης. Το δικαστήριο καταδίκασε τον Φιλίππου σε 4 χρόνια φυλάκιση σε αγροτικές φυλακές και ύστερα από δύο χρόνια αφέθηκε ελεύθερος. Οι εκλογές έβγαλαν νικητή τον Κ. Καραμανλή, όμως δεν πήρε ψήφο εμπιστοσύνης και ορίστηκαν νέες εκλογές στις 16 Φεβρουαρίου το 1964, οι οποίες ήταν και οι τελευταίες βουλευτικές εκλογές πριν την εγκαθίδρυση της Δικτατορία.

STEFANOS VELDEMIRIS
Stefanos Veldemiris was born in 1937 in Sykies, Thessaloniki. He was assassinated on October 26th, 1961 and is commemorated as a fighter who was murdered while fighting for democratic freedoms. It was three days before the parliamentary elections of October 29th 1961, the elections of violence and fraud as they had historically recorded. The Centre Union alleged that the election result had been staged by the agents of the shadowy “para-state” (παρακράτος), including the army leadership, the Greek Central Inteligence Service, and the notoriously right-wing National Guard Defence Battalions, according to a prepared emergency plan code-named Pericles (Σχέδιο «Περικλής») led by G. Papadopoulos, later dictator of Greece in 1967. They unleashed terrorism, violence and beatings of democratic citizens in order to change their minds and determine the election results. The United Democratic Left participated in the elections under the name of PAME. Stefanos Veldemiris was an active member of the youth of the Center Union (EDA). Together with Morfi Stefoudis they rented a taxi and from the back windows they distributed EDA leaflets in western Thessaloniki. At a police checkpoint in Abelokipi, the policeman Spyridon Filippou shot and killed Veldemiris, who died the next day at the People’s Hospital of Thessaloniki, (now Hippocration), aged only 24. The trial of the murderer gendarme, Spyridon Filippou, took place five months later at the Thessaloniki Criminal Court. The court sentenced Filippou to 4 years in a rural prison and after two years he was released. The election was won by Karamanlis but he did not get the vote of confidence of the other parties and new elections were called on February 16th, 1964 which were the last parliamentary elections before the dictatorship.
