ΧΡΥΣΟΣΤΟΜΟΣ ΣΜΥΡΝΗΣ
Ο Άγιος Χρυσόστομος Σμύρνης (1867–1922), κατά κόσμον Χρυσόστομος Καλαφάτης, υπήρξε μία από τις σημαντικότερες μορφές της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας και του Μικρασιατικού Ελληνισμού. Γεννήθηκε στην Τρίγλια της Βιθυνίας και από νεαρή ηλικία αφιερώθηκε στην Εκκλησία, σπουδάζοντας με άριστες επιδόσεις στη Θεολογική Σχολή της Χάλκης. Το 1902 εξελέγη Μητροπολίτης Δράμας, όπου ανέπτυξε έντονη εθνική και εκπαιδευτική δράση κατά τη διάρκεια του Μακεδονικού Αγώνα, ιδρύοντας σχολεία και ενισχύοντας τις ελληνικές κοινότητες. Το 1910 ανέλαβε τη Μητρόπολη Σμύρνης και εργάστηκε ακούραστα για την παιδεία, τη φιλανθρωπία, την κοινωνική πρόνοια και την ανάπτυξη του αθλητισμού, στηρίζοντας ιδιαίτερα τη νεολαία. Κατά τη Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή αρνήθηκε να εγκαταλείψει το ποίμνιό του, παρά τις προτάσεις για ασφαλή διαφυγή, δηλώνοντας: «Είμαι ποιμένας και οφείλω να μείνω κοντά στο ποίμνιό μου». Στις 27 Αυγούστου 1922 συνελήφθη από τις τουρκικές αρχές και παραδόθηκε στον εξαγριωμένο όχλο, ο οποίος τον βασάνισε και τον κατακρεούργησε. Το 1993 η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία τον ανακήρυξε Άγιο και Ιερομάρτυρα, ενώ σήμερα τιμάται ως προστάτης των Μικρασιατών και φωτεινό σύμβολο πίστης, αυτοθυσίας και αγάπης προς τον άνθρωπο και την πατρίδα.

CHRISOSTOMUS SMYRNIS
Saint Chrysostomos of Smyrna (1867–1922), born Chrysostomos Kalafatis, was one of the most important figures of the Orthodox Church and of the Greek population of Asia Minor. He was born in Triglia of Bithynia and, from an early age, dedicated himself to the Church, graduating with highest honors from the Theological School of Halki. In 1902 he was elected Metropolitan of Drama, where he developed remarkable national and educational work during the Macedonian Struggle by founding schools and strengthening the Greek communities. In 1910 he became Metropolitan of Smyrna and worked tirelessly for education, charity, social welfare, and the promotion of sports, giving special attention to the younger generation. During the Asia Minor Catastrophe, he refused to abandon his flock despite repeated offers of safe escape, declaring: “I am a shepherd, and I am obliged to remain with my flock.” On 27 August 1922, he was arrested by the Turkish authorities and handed over to an enraged mob, who tortured and brutally murdered him. In 1993, the Orthodox Church canonized him as a Saint and Hieromartyr. Today he is honored as the patron saint of the Asia Minor Greeks and remains a shining symbol of faith, self-sacrifice, and devotion to both humanity and his homeland.
