ANAXIMENES

One of the important pre-Socratic philosophers of Ionia, a student or successor of Anaximander, who lived in the 6th century BC. Anaximenes is considered to have tried to explain nature and the universe on the basis of a simple primary element, air, from which, according to his philosophy, all other elements and beings arise through condensation and dilution.

“The soul is the substance that holds us together, and the whole world contains spirit and air.”

(Anaximenes, excerpt 2)

His theories are a continuation of Anaximander’s observation and rational approach, focusing on the unity and interdependence of natural phenomena. Anaximenes contributed to the development of natural philosophy and early scientific thought, significantly influencing later philosophers of the Ionian cycle, such as Heraclitus and Democritus.
