ΜΑΝΟΣ ΚΑΤΡΑΚΗΣ
Ο Μάνος Κατράκης ήταν κορυφαίος Έλληνας ηθοποιός του θεάτρου και του κινηματογράφου. Γεννήθηκε στο Καστέλι Κισσάμου της Κρήτης και στα νεανικά του χρόνια ήταν ποδοσφαιριστής. Το 1927 εμφανίστηκε πρώτη φορά στη θεατρική σκηνή της Αθήνας και το 1928 έπαιξε πρώτη φορά σε ταινία βουβή Το Λάβαρο του ’21. Το 1931, μπήκε στο Εθνικό Θέατρο. Ως μέλος του Εθνικού Απελευθερωτικού Μετώπου (ΕΑΜ) και του ΚΚΕ, πήρε μέρος στον πόλεμο της Εθνικής Αντίστασης στη διάρκεια της Κατοχής. Αργότερα διώχθηκε για τις αριστερές του ιδέες και εξορίστηκε για 7 χρόνια στη Μακρόνησο και τον Αϊ-Στράτη. Το 1943, ως πρόεδρος του Σωματείου Ελλήνων Ηθοποιών, συνέβαλε θερμά στην ίδρυση του Κρατικού Θεάτρου Θεσσαλονίκης, όπου και έπαιξε μέχρι το 1946, οπότε και επέστρεψε στο Εθνικό. Το 1955 ίδρυσε το Ελληνικό Λαϊκό Θέατρο κι ανέβαζε έργα Ελλήνων συγγραφέων, όπως του Καζαντζάκη. Στο Εθνικό, από το 1972 ως το 1974 πρωταγωνίστησε ως Οθέλλο, Δον Κιχώτης και στην Επίδαυρο ως Οιδίποδας Τύραννος και ως Προμηθέας Δεσμώτης. Στη μνήμη του κόσμου έχει αποτυπωθεί η χαρακτηριστική φωνή του που έντυσε πολλά κείμενα νεοελληνικής λογοτεχνίας, ενώ οι αναγνώσεις του έμειναν κλασικές. Ο Μάνος Κατράκης ήταν καπνιστής και πέθανε από καρκίνο του πνεύμονα το 1984 σε ηλικία 76 χρονών. Το 1984, πριν πεθάνει, πρωταγωνίστησε στην ταινία του Θ. Αγγελόπουλου Ταξίδι στα Κύθηρα.

MANOS KATRAKIS
Manos Katrakis was a leading Greek actor of the theatre and film. He was born in Kastelli Kissamos, Crete and during his youth, he was a soccer player. In 1927 he first appeared on the theatre stage in Athens and in 1928 he acted in his first movie The Banner of 21. In 1931 Manos Katrakis performed in the National Theatre. He was a member of National Liberal Front (EAM) and Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and took part in the Resistance during the German Occupation. He was later persecuted for his leftist ideas and after refusing to sign a declaration of repentance during the civil war he was exiled for 7 years to Makronissos and Ai-Stratis. In 1943, as president of the Greek Actors’ Association, he made a great contribution to the establishment of the State Theatre of Thessaloniki, where he performed until 1946, when he returned to the National Theatre in Athens. In 1955 he founded the Hellenic People’s Theatre and staged plays of Greek writers such as Kazantzakis. At the National Theatre from 1972 to 1974 he starred as Othello, Don Quixote and at Epidaurus Ancient Theatre as Oedipus Tyrannus and Prometheus Bound. The world remembers his distinctive voice which was used in many readings of modern Greek literature where his performance was exceptional. Manos Katrakis had been an avid smoker for most of his life and died of lung cancer in 1984 at the age of 76. In 1984, shortly before his death, he filmed his last and best movie Taxidi sta Kythira, Journey to Kythira, with director Theo Angelopoulos.
